Young Horse, Changing Body: When to Start Saddle Fitting and How Often After That
Starting a young horse under saddle is one of the most exciting milestones in an equestrian's journey. It is also one of the most critical moments to get saddle fit right. Young horses change dramatically in their first years of work, and the wrong saddle during that time can set them back physically and mentally.
Why young horses are a fitting challenge
A 3 or 4 year old horse is still building topline muscle, filling out through the shoulder, and maturing through the back. What fits in April may be pressing on the withers by September. Young horses cannot tell you with words that something hurts, but they absolutely will tell you with their behavior.
Common mistakes when starting young horses
Using an "old reliable" saddle from another horse without checking the fit is one of the most frequent issues we see. Many owners also wait until the horse is fully trained before investing in a proper fitting, or assume that because the horse is calm, the saddle must be fine. Unfortunately, a calm horse can still be a horse in discomfort.
How often should you check fit on a young horse?
Every 2 to 3 months during the first 1 to 2 years of work is not unusual. Their bodies are changing that fast. Once they have matured and built consistent topline, typically around age 5 to 6, you can shift to the standard schedule of every 6 to 12 months.
Signs a young horse's saddle needs attention
Reluctance to move forward or stand for mounting, bucking or tension during early work sessions (often blamed on "greenness"), uneven sweat marks after riding, and developing a cold back behavior are all signs worth taking seriously. These are not training problems. They are often saddle problems.
The WOW saddle advantage for young horses
Modular, adjustable saddles like WOW are particularly well suited to horses in training, because they can be reconfigured as the horse develops rather than replaced entirely. This makes them a smart long term investment for anyone bringing a young horse along.
